New Project!

 Hello Everybody!

I've started a new project for an old addiction:  organizing my DMC floss.

I just bought 1,000 plastic bobbins and 2 ArtBin Super Satchel Slims from JoAnn's.  I'm starting to take all my loose skeins and wind them onto bobbins.

I have the finished ones sorted by number "families":  >100, 100's, 200's, etc.

I also have a bunch that are on cardboard bobbins that I need to switch over to plastic:

Since this bin is 12" x 12" x 12" and about half full, I'm going to be here awhile.  Some of them are already on plastic bobbins, so they just need to be sorted.

Once I've got them all on bobbins, I'll put them into the Slim cases.  I have 5 filled already so I figured 2 more should handle these extras as far as overall storage space.  I'll start putting my entire stash into the new boxes in numerical order and should be able to empty each successive box as I go.  I will need to leave a bit of room in each box to hold the floss that's already being used in other projects.  I really believe that when I'm done, my master stash will need all 7 boxes!

Storing Floss

I've written about this once before, but thought I'd do an updated post.

What might be hidden behind door #1:

This is the armoire that I finally painted.  The door is covered in chalkboard paint - I've just been too lazy to actually write anything on it.

And behind the door we find...

The top shelf holds my few paints and glues.  The next 3 shelves are the real treat:  floss!

The boxes are these:


I needed five of the thin ones to hold all my DMC floss.  If you click on the photo, you can see that I've added my own custom labels to show what numbers are in each box (engraved!  Ah the perks of owning your own trophy shop.).

The larger box holds my specialty flosses:  GAST, Wildflowers, Perle Cottons, etc.

The bobbins that I use are:

The smaller bobbins are for my DMC, the larger ones are for my specialty threads.

The DMC floss that I need for a project gets pulled from my master stash and put on rings.  I always store them in numerical order so that they are easy to find.

Here are the flosses that I'm using for La Belle Dame Sans Merci:

As you can see, I have 4 rings of floss for this project.  The first number I'm using is 154 which is on the leftmost ring and the last number is 3864 which is on the rightmost ring and all the other numbers are in order in between.

What I love about this way of doing it, apart from the fact that it works for me, is:

• They're organized
• Easy to find
• Take up very little room
• Easily accessible
• Easy to store with the project when it's not being worked on

Well, no one even came close!  The floss that I have the most is 800 and I have 27 skeins of it.

I'll definitely have a giveaway sometime in the near future and I promise that it'll be easier!

Now that I've cataloged all my floss, I thought I'd do a floss-related giveaway. 

What you have to do is Comment on this post with the DMC number of the floss you think I have the most of  and how many skeins of that color.  Now since DMC has 450+ solid colors, I will narrow it down for you.  I will mention that two of the color numbers that I'm going to list are original variegated because at least one of them made my top ten (in quantity).
